Foliar Water Uptake Capacity in Six Mangrove Species

چکیده
Foliar water uptake (FWU) is a mechanism that enables plants to acquire from the atmosphere through their leaves. As mangroves live in saline sediment environment, of FWU might be vital importance freshwater and grow. The goal this study was assess capacity six different mangrove species belonging four genera using series submersion experiments which leaf mass increase measured expressed per unit area. foliar differed between with highest lowest average Avicennia marina (Forssk.) Vierh. (1.52 ± 0.48 mg H2O cm−2) Bruguiera gymnorhiza (L.) Lam. (0.13 0.06 cm−2), respectively. Salt-excreting showed higher than non-excreting species. Moreover, A. marina, salt-excreting species, distinct anatomical trait, i.e., trichomes, were not observed other involved absorption process. storage leaves moist Ziplock bags prior measurement caused already occur during transport field station, proportionately increased potential (A. marina: −0.31 0.13 MPa B. gymnorhiza: −2.70 0.27 MPa). This should considered when performing best practice measurements but did affect quantification because gradient surrounding submersion. Our results highlight differences exist residing same area growing under environmental conditions. comparative therefore enhances our understanding species’ functioning.

Molecular mechanisms of foliar water uptake in a desert tree.
Water deficits severely affect growth, particularly for the plants in arid and semiarid regions of the world. In addition to precipitation, other subsidiary water, such as dew, fog, clouds and small rain showers, may also be absorbed by leaves in a process known as foliar water uptake. With the severe scarcity of water in desert regions, this process is increasingly becoming a necessity. Studie...
متن کاملFoliar heavy metal uptake, toxicity and detoxification in plants: A comparison of foliar and root metal uptake.
Anthropologic activities have transformed global biogeochemical cycling of heavy metals by emitting considerable quantities of these metals into the atmosphere from diverse sources. In spite of substantial and progressive developments in industrial processes and techniques to reduce environmental emissions, atmospheric contamination by toxic heavy metals and associated ecological and health ris...
متن کاملFoliar Water Uptake of Tamarix ramosissima from an Atmosphere of High Humidity
Many species have been found to be capable of foliar water uptake, but little research has focused on this in desert plants. Tamarix ramosissima was investigated to determine whether its leaves can directly absorb water from high humidity atmosphere and, if they can, to understand the magnitude and importance of foliar water uptake. Various techniques were adopted to demonstrate foliar water up...
متن کاملContrasting physiological responses of six eucalyptus species to water deficit.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The genus Eucalyptus occupies a broad ecological range, forming the dominant canopy in many Australian ecosystems. Many Eucalyptus species are renowned for tolerance to aridity, yet inter-specific variation in physiological traits, particularly water relations parameters, contributing to this tolerance is weakly characterized only in a limited taxonomic range. The study test...
متن کاملRhizophoraceae Mangrove Saplings Use Hypocotyl and Leaf Water Storage Capacity to Cope with Soil Water Salinity Changes
Some of the most striking features of Rhizophoraceae mangrove saplings are their voluminous cylinder-shaped hypocotyls and thickened leaves. The hypocotyls are known to serve as floats during seed dispersal (hydrochory) and store nutrients that allow the seedling to root and settle. In this study we investigate to what degree the hypocotyls and leaves can serve as water reservoirs once seedling...
